A Tarp Won't Protect a Car Through Winter

A tarp does not keep a car safe. It flaps in the wind, traps moisture against the paint and is usually torn by spring. A carport shades the roof but leaves the sides open to snow, blowing rain and anyone walking by, and plenty of homeowners end up parking in the driveway or on the street because the garage is full of everything else.

A car, truck or bike that sits through a winter, or a season away, needs more than a cover. It needs a dry space, a door that locks and some air movement, so damp does not settle into the paint, the upholstery and the engine bay.

A steel container is a fully enclosed, lockable garage you can put on your property. A 20ft holds a car or a couple of motorcycles with room along one wall for tools and tires, and a 40ft holds two vehicles or a car with a workbench. Drive in, shut the doors and walk away.

Setting Up Your Container for a Garage

  • Ground and placement: Choose a firm, level spot such as a gravel or concrete pad, with a straight approach to the doors so you can drive in without turning at the last second.
  • Driving in: The doors are at one end and the floor sits a few inches above the ground. A short ramp or a pad built up to floor height makes getting in and out easy, and leave room in front for the doors to open fully.
  • Road and truck access: Our tilt-bed trucks need a clear path, room to back up and space clear of wires and branches. Tell us about your driveway or yard when you request a quote and we will confirm delivery will work before you order.
  • Ventilation: Add vents, or leave the doors cracked open on dry days, so moisture does not sit on the paint and chrome. For long storage, a moisture absorber and a battery tender help.
  • Locking: Fit a quality padlock or lock box, and keep the doors latched whenever you are away.
  • Organizing: Inside, a container is just under 8ft wide, so car doors open only partway. Park a little off-centre and use the length of the box, not the width, for shelving, tires and tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a car into a shipping container?

You drive straight in through the doors at one end. The opening is roughly 7.5ft wide, and the floor sits a few inches above the ground, so a short ramp or a pad built up to floor height helps. Measure your vehicle with the mirrors folded in, and tell us what you drive when you request a quote.

What size container do I need for a car?

A 20ft container holds one car, truck or a couple of motorcycles, with a little room for tires and tools. A 40ft container fits two vehicles, or one vehicle with a workbench. Larger RVs and boats are usually too big, so tell us what you want to store and we will say whether it will fit.

Will a lifted truck or a van fit?

Often yes in a high cube container, which has a taller door opening than a standard one. Measure the height and width of your vehicle, with roof racks and mirrors, and send us the numbers so we can confirm before you order.

Is a container better than a carport or a portable garage?

A carport is open at the sides, and a fabric portable garage can tear in strong wind or heavy snow. A steel container is fully enclosed, locks, and handles snow and wind without trouble. The trade-off is that it is a fixed steel box with the doors at one end, so you drive in straight rather than from the side.

Will my vehicle stay dry and rust-free?

A cargo-worthy container is sealed against wind and rain. The remaining risk is condensation when temperatures swing, so add vents, keep a moisture absorber inside and use a cover or battery tender for long storage. See our Quality Guarantee page for what each grade means.

How long does delivery take?

Most deliveries arrive within 1–3 business days of your order, depending on inventory and site conditions. We confirm the timing when you request a quote.
